QANTAS flies into Hervey Bay

Qantaslink services between Brisbane and Hervey Bay began this week offering passengers improved levels of comfort and in-flight services not previously offered on the route. Qantaslink will operate 32 services a week between the two cities with the route to be serviced by the 36-seater Dash 8 twin-turbo prop aircraft.

Qantaslink regional services general manager Elsa D'Alessio said the carrier was excited to be servicing the Brisbane-Hervey Bay route. "We will offer more than 56,000 seats on services between Brisbane and Hervey Bay each year, but more importantly, we offer a more comfortable service for passengers through our Dash 8 aircraft," Ms D'Alessio said. ''The Dash 8 is quieter than the aircraft previously servicing this route and we will offer an on-board restroom, full &tanding height cabin, services for passengers confined to wheelchairs and food and refreshments.

''The legroom on the Dash 8 is equivalent to that of a Boeing 737 and flight time between Brisbane and Hervey Bay is just 45 minutes." Ms D'Alessio said other benefits for passengers included seamless transition of bagg-dge to the Brisbane domestic and international terminals for connecting Qantas flights as well as Qantas Club and frequent flyer services. Hervey Bay City Council manager Tourism and Economic Development Larry Monk said passengers would welcome the extra inflight capabilities offered by Qantaslink. "Qantaslink is honouring tickets previously purchased through Sunshine Express which is an advantage and the Dash 8 aircraft do offer more comfort than the Metroliner preViously servicing the route," Mr Monk said. 'We welcome Qantaslink to the city and look forward to a prosperous future together'

Property Developers move into Hervey Bay

Hervey Bay site lures nationwide interest

Developers along the length the eastern seaboard and from Adelaide are circling a Hervey Bay development parcel destined to house a large residential community. The near-50ha site is the subject of a development application before Hervey Bay City Council seeking approval of 264 housing lots, 188 retirement villas and a high-density apartment project. The seller is Endless View Holdings, a company under administration and linked to Brisbane investors, bought the vacant rural property in Doolong South Road, Wondunna, in May, 2004.

Agent Lachlan Harris, of Ray White Commercial Gold Coast, said the site was surrounded by residential uses and was next to Fraser Coast Anglican College. The parcel is about 5km west of the beach and Hervey Bay's business district. Mr Harris said Hervey Bay was `flavour of the month' with developers keen to capitalise on the region's population growth and burgeoning tourism industry. "The winning combination of investment opportunities and affordable living costs that characterises Hervey Bay has proved to be a drawcard for people from all over the world," he said. Mr Harris said major deve-lopers from across the country had shown solid interest in the parcel which is the subject of a tender campaign closing on April 4. "I have even had calls from Adelaide development companies, which is unusual," he said.

Mr Harris said Hervey Bay had recently benefited from the upgrade of its airport, which handles flights to and from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Gold Coast development company the Potter Group last year unveiled plans for a $2 billion next-generation Sanctuary Cove on a 290ha beachfront site on the Fraser Coast. The company, headed by property industry veteran and former VillaWorld chief executive John Potter, has entered into a development agreement with landowners Austech to create Golden Waters, a master-planned residential, resort and golf course community. The project is expected to take between 10 and 15 years to complete and ultimately will accommodate about 6000 people. Other property players to put a foot down in Hervey Bay include Watpac and the Seymour Group.

Hervey Bay Property Booms!

Christian Ainsworth, son of poker machine king Len Ainsworth, is planning a $40 million backpacker resort in Queensland's booming Hervey Bay.
Like Queensland property entrepreneur Kevin Seymour, Mr Ainsworth is targeting Hervey Bay, 300kilometres north of Brisbane, given its increasing attraction to tourists and as a jumping off point for the world-heritage listed Fraser Island and whale watching.
The Midwood Queensland Property Investment Report released yesterday found Hervey Bay is becoming increasingly attractive to tourists, with a 3.7 per cent rise in occupancy rates in the December 2005 quarter from the previous quarter. Room rates over that time rose 2 per cent to an average of $88.70 per night.
In a rare interview, Mr Ainsworth told The Australian Financial Review yesterday that he was keen to develop another Gilligan's Backpackers Hotel & Resort in Hervey Bay, similar to his successful Gilligan's operation in the heart of Cairns.
Mr Ainsworth's company, CJHA, acquired a prime waterfront development site from Watpac and the Seymour Group for $11.25 million.

Mr Ainsworth said he was about to lodge plans with the Hervey Bay council to develop the backpacker hostel on the 36 Hillyard Street, Pialba, site. The hostel will be large, with Mr Ainsworth planning to accommodate up to 500 guests.
Construction of the project, which is expected to include a convention centre and lagoon pool, will start as soon as approval is granted.
The hostel will be targeted at the top end of the backpacker market and provide budget accommodation for families.
Watpac and Seymour Group decided to sell the 18,000 square metre site acquired in 2004 for about $6.5 million given Watpac, Queensland's largest publicly listed construction company, holds extensive property assets in the Hervey Bay area. Watpac and Seymour Group had planned apartments for the site.
But Watpac was concentrating on the Urangan Boat Harbour Precinct Redevelopment and this was part of the reason for the sale of the Hillyard Street site, said Watpac managing director Greg Kempton.
"We are currently focusing our energy and resources in submitting an expression of interest to the Queensland government for this redevelopment initiative," MrKempton said.
"There is a much bigger opportunity for us at Urangan where we own part of the boat harbour, the marina slipway and the boat lifter. There is also potential to develop apartments." Watpac also owns the ABC site at Hervey Bay.
Mr Kempton said Hervey Bay had rapidly increased in popularity as a lucrative investment opportunity and an area of property growth after the scheduling of budget flights from southern cities by both low-cost airlines.
"Investment potential has been rapidly increasing in the region over the years and to this end Watpac continues to explore further opportunities in Hervey Bay," MrKempton said.
"A new era in property development and investment is arising and Hervey Bay is very much a part of this. Interest in Hervey Bay is increasing as parties realise the value of committing to investment and redevelopment in this region. Watpac is no exception and as we always have been, remain committed to continuing our operations there."
